A Global Womanist Framework for Information Literacy Instruction
Presentation | Thursday, June 12th, 2025 | 12:30pm – 1:00pm EST
This presentation explores womanist theory as a framework for transforming academic library instruction. Womanism, rooted in the lived experiences of Black women and women of color, challenges traditional Western pedagogy by recognizing diverse ways of knowing and promoting social justice. By embracing “polyrhythmic realities,” womanist pedagogy acknowledges the complex, intersecting identities individuals bring to the learning environment. This approach fosters inclusivity, dialogue, and an ethic of care, enriching the library classroom and empowering students from marginalized groups. The presentation will examine practical applications of womanist theory in library instruction, demonstrating how this powerful lens can create a more holistic and equitable learning experience for all.
